PROJECT co-founder Hélène Filion Onserud has close to 30 years of experience in social work as practitioner, supervisor, program director, trainer, and scholar. She is employed by the Center for Family Life in Brooklyn, NY, as Site Director for Community School Project Beacon at P.S. 1 and also oversees two other youth development programs. In this capacity Onserud designs, implements, and provides leadership for programming, including in-service training and activities.
From 2007 to 2010 Onserud designed and developed organizational policies and programs toward the documentation of social group work as a promising practice for the Beacon Young Adolescent Initiative.
Hélène Onserud also provides ongoing training in social group work to youth development workers, program planners, and supervisors, has presented nationally and internationally on youth development initiatives and the use of social group work in working with youth, and is a member of the International Association of Social Work with Groups, Inc.
“Having been in the youth development field as a group worker for the last 30 years,” notes Onserud, “I believe that social group work is an essential element in the professionalization of the that field. Social group work is the best way I know to accomplish youth development goals — the “how” (method) in terms of achieving youth development competencies… I also believe,” she adds, “that social group work creates a culture that promotes positive norms and mutual aid, both of which allow social-emotional learning to take place and to take hold on a deep level.”
